How to use this calculator

Start with the deterministic fixture values already shown, then replace each input with measurements from your job. Use consistent units and review the highlighted assumptions before using the result in purchasing or production.

Formula and method

Ribbon length is divided by feed pitch (label height plus gap), multiplied by labels across, rounded down, and reduced by the setup/waste allowance. Required ribbons are rounded up.

Worked example

A 450 m ribbon, 100 mm label, 3 mm gap and one label across yields 4,368 theoretical or 4,236 adjusted labels at 3% waste. A 10,000-label job needs three ribbons with 2,708 adjusted labels of capacity remaining.

How to interpret the result

Remaining capacity is the planned spare capacity across all required ribbons, not a guarantee that the last ribbon can be reused on every printer.

Limitations

Ribbon width, core, length, ink-side coating and formulation must match the printer and media. This tool does not select them.
