How to use this calculator
Start with the deterministic fixture values already shown, then replace each input with measurements from your job. Use consistent units and review the highlighted assumptions before using the result in purchasing or production.
Formula and method
The conversion is dots = mm ÷ 25.4 × actual DPI. Standard presets use 8, 12 and 24 dots/mm (203.2, 304.8 and 609.6 actual DPI). Floor, nearest or ceiling creates an integer raster dimension; converting back reveals actual size and error.

Worked example
At 12 dots/mm (300 DPI nominal), 50 mm is exactly 600 dots and converts back to exactly 50 mm.
How to interpret the result
Use the manufacturer’s actual dots/mm or dot pitch. Nearest minimizes absolute error; floor or ceiling is useful where a layout must stay inside or outside a boundary.
Millimetres, inches and printer dots
Use the selected DPI for the exact arithmetic. The calculator converts millimetres or inches to whole dots and converts a dot count back to both millimetres and inches.
dots = mm × DPI ÷ 25.4
mm = dots × 25.4 ÷ DPI
inches = dots ÷ DPICommon thermal printer resolutions
203 DPI is approximately 8 dots/mm, 300 DPI approximately 12 dots/mm, and 600 DPI approximately 24 dots/mm. These are convenient rules of thumb. A printhead specified as exactly 8, 12 or 24 dots/mm corresponds to 203.2, 304.8 or 609.6 actual DPI, so use that actual value when the manufacturer provides it.
Common mm-to-dots conversion table
Values use the stated nominal DPI and nearest whole-dot rounding.
| Size | 203 DPI | 300 DPI | 600 DPI |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 mm | 80 | 118 | 236 |
| 20 mm | 160 | 236 | 472 |
| 25 mm | 200 | 295 | 591 |
| 30 mm | 240 | 354 | 709 |
| 50 mm | 400 | 591 | 1,181 |
| 75 mm | 599 | 886 | 1,772 |
| 100 mm | 799 | 1,181 | 2,362 |
| 150 mm | 1,199 | 1,772 | 3,543 |
Common inch label sizes in printer dots
These starting dimensions use the stated nominal DPI and nearest whole-dot rounding. Confirm the printer's actual dots-per-millimetre specification before committing a production format.
| Label size | 203 DPI | 300 DPI | 600 DPI |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 × 1 in | 406 × 203 | 600 × 300 | 1,200 × 600 |
| 4 × 2 in | 812 × 406 | 1,200 × 600 | 2,400 × 1,200 |
| 4 × 6 in | 812 × 1,218 | 1,200 × 1,800 | 2,400 × 3,600 |
Limitations
Marketing labels such as 203, 300 or 600 DPI may be nominal. Mechanical tolerances, alignment and media movement still affect printed dimensions.
