Minimum X-dimension, bar height and quiet-zone requirements depend on the symbology, application and current governing specification. Verify the applicable specification.

How to use this calculator

Start with the deterministic fixture values already shown, then replace each input with measurements from your job. Use consistent units and review the highlighted assumptions before using the result in purchasing or production.

Formula and method

Each allowed integer dot width is converted to millimetres at the chosen DPI. The candidate with the smallest absolute distance from the requested X-dimension is selected. Optional module and quiet-zone counts produce physical widths.

Worked example

For a desired 0.33 mm module at 300 DPI across 2–6 dots, 4 dots is closest at 0.3387 mm (+2.63%). Ten quiet-zone modules occupy about 3.387 mm on each side.

How to interpret the result

Compare candidates, not only the highlighted value. A different integer width may be required to meet the specification that governs your symbol.

Limitations

There is no universal barcode minimum. Symbology, data, scanning distance, substrate, application and the current governing specification determine X-dimension, height and quiet zones.
