How to use this calculator
Start with the deterministic fixture values already shown, then replace each input with measurements from your job. Use consistent units and review the highlighted assumptions before using the result in purchasing or production.
Formula and method
SSCC uses the GS1 modulo-10 method. Starting with the rightmost of the 17 body digits, multiply alternating digits by 3 and 1, add the products, and choose the final digit that completes a multiple of ten.
Worked example
For SSCC body 10614141123456789, the weighted sum requires check digit 7, producing the complete SSCC 106141411234567897.
How to interpret the result
An SSCC identifies an individual logistic unit such as a pallet, case or parcel. The 18 digits consist of an extension digit, GS1 Company Prefix and serial reference followed by the check digit.
SSCC structure and Application Identifier (00)
The SSCC data field is exactly 18 digits: extension digit, GS1 Company Prefix and serial reference, then the check digit. When encoded as a GS1 element string, Application Identifier (00) precedes the SSCC but is not included in this calculation.
The split between GS1 Company Prefix and serial reference varies with the licensed prefix length. This calculator therefore treats the first 17 digits as one body and does not attempt to infer that boundary.
SSCC versus GTIN
An SSCC identifies an individual logistic unit for transport or storage. A GTIN identifies a trade item type. They use the same check-digit arithmetic but are different GS1 identification keys and are not interchangeable.
Limitations
Checksum validity does not establish uniqueness, allocation, ownership or correct use of the GS1 Company Prefix. The Application Identifier (00) is not part of the 18-digit SSCC entered here.
